There is a common saying that if you have only a short time to visit Iceland, you should go to the South Coast. South Iceland has various natural phenomena close by the ring road, which circles around the island. I think, this is my favourite part of Iceland as well, because you can find a bit of everything here. Amazing black send beaches, endless lava fields covered by fluffy moss, huge waterfalls, dramatic cliffs, surreal glaciers, glacier lagoons and ice caves. South Coast Iceland, truly the best place for a romantic elopement.
Most of us, who are not originally from this land, the first meeting of the landscape is breathtaking. Something you dramed of, you imgained, you hoped for, but still unbelievable when you reach it. These memories you collect there, truly change your life and your vision of beauty and nature, even yourself for good. Your visual beauty standard won't be the same anymore. You need to believe me, this journey is going to be a life time experience. Especially, if you are planing to make your dream romantic elopement in this incrediable island.
Probably, the best decision to make, to began a new chapter of your life together, is choosing Iceland, and make your special day unforgettable, and even more amazing than you can imagine at the moment.
But, you need to know, if you choose the South Coast for your elopement, you need to plan wisely and you need to be flexible, too. Iceland is getting more and more popular during the years, and these deservedly famous locations could be crowded in every season. But choosing the right timing, not just because of the perfect lights, but also for getting away from people around, is essential to have the best result. Though, during the endless summer days, it could be easier than you think, I know it might sounds crazy, but the uniqueness of the brightness during the nights can change the game...
All season has their own beauty. Summer serves you long days, with midnight sunset and no darkness to explore the island. Spring and autumn brings the vivid colors and softer lights. Winter time can be tricky, but the white snow and black lava gives you a dramatic landscape with its contrast. But no matter which season you choose for your elopement, layers and waterproof gear are essiential, because the weather can change fast. If it is rainy, or windy or even sunny, Icelandic says: "If you don't liket the weather, just wait 5 minutes and it will change!"
And now, let me show you a teaser of these places, which - I promise - are gonna steal your heart forever.
Can you imagine yourself eloping here?
No. 1 - Skógafoss: The Iconic Waterfall Portrait

Skógafoss is often the first major stop along the South Coast, and for good reason. The 60-meter waterfall crashes down in a perfect curtain of water, creating a dramatic backdrop that feels almost cinematic.
For wedding photos, the best approach is usually to photograph both from the base and from the top of the falls. At the bottom, you’ll capture the scale of the waterfall towering behind you. Climb the staircase to the viewing platform, and you’ll find sweeping views of the river winding toward the ocean.

Best for:
epic waterfall portraits
adventurous veil shots
rainbow-filled images on sunny days.
No. 2 - Eldhraun Lava Field: Moss-Covered Magic

Eldhraun is one of the largest lava fields in the world, covered in thick green moss that makes the landscape look almost otherworldly. Unlike Iceland’s more famous attractions, this area often feels quiet and intimate.
The soft textures and muted colors create beautiful, romantic portraits that contrast perfectly with Iceland’s dramatic scenery elsewhere.
Best for:
intimate couple portraits
earthy tones
peaceful secluded atmosphere
No. 3 - Fjaðrárgljúfur: The Fairytale Canyon

Fjaðrárgljúfur is a winding canyon with steep mossy walls and a river flowing through the bottom. The viewpoints along the rim offer incredible depth and scale for photographs.
This location works especially well for elopements because the canyon creates natural leading lines that draw attention to the couple.
Best for:
wide landscape compositions
fairytale-style imagery
No. 4-5 - Reynisfjara & Dyrhólaey: Black Sand & Sea Cliffs

These two locations are only a short drive apart and pair beautifully together.
Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
Reynisfjara has always been one of the most dramatic places on the South Coast, with its black volcanic sand, basalt columns, and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising from the ocean. But over the last year, the beach has changed in a way that many visitors have really felt. Landslip concerns and ongoing safety issues have led to closures and restricted access in parts of the area, and the experience of visiting Reynisfjara is no longer quite the same as it once was.
That change matters for photography, but it also changes the feeling of the place itself. Reynisfjara used to be a location where you could spend more time exploring the shoreline and working with the shifting light and textures. Now, there is a stronger sense of caution and limitation, and mostly the beach not be accessible at all. From other parts of the beach, you can still often get views of the sea stacks, which remain one of the most iconic features of the coastline, but the atmosphere is different because the focus has shifted so heavily toward safety and preservation.
For wedding photos, the contrast between a white dress and the dark beach is still stunning, but it’s important to plan carefully and be prepared for the possibility that the beach may be closed or partially inaccessible. Reynisfjara may always remain iconic, but it won’t be the same place it was before.
Dyrhólaey
Dyrhólaey offers panoramic views of the coastline, dramatic cliffs, and the famous rock arch extending into the sea. At sunset, the light here can be incredible.
Best for:
dramatic coastal portraits
black-and-white photography
sunset views
No. 6 - Yoda Cave: A Unique Adventure Stop

Yoda Cave (Gígjagjá) is a lava cave whose opening resembles the silhouette of Yoda from Star Wars. It’s a fun and distinctive location that adds variety to a South Coast wedding gallery. The cave frames the couple naturally, while the surrounding black sand landscape keeps the Icelandic mood. Also, there are other cliffs and rock formations on the beach near the cave.
Best for:
playful, adventurous portraits
unique framing

No. 7 - Svínafellsjökull: Glacier Drama

Svínafellsjökull is one of Iceland’s most photogenic glacier tongues. Jagged blue ice, dark volcanic ridges, and constantly changing textures make this area feel incredibly wild. Even from the main viewpoint, you can create powerful images that showcase Iceland’s glacial landscape.
Best for:
dramatic adventure portraits
icy blue tones
No. 8 - Múlagljúfur Canyon: The Hidden Gem

Múlagljúfur has become one of the South Coast’s most sought-after photo locations, yet it still feels relatively untouched. The hike leads to breathtaking views of a deep canyon, waterfalls, and distant glaciers. This is the place for couples who want photos that feel truly epic.
Best for:
adventure elopements
hiking portraits
sweeping canyon and waterfall views
No. 9 - Fjallsárlón: Quiet Glacier Lagoon

Often overshadowed by its famous neighbor, Fjallsárlón offers a more peaceful glacier lagoon experience. Icebergs float across the water beneath a massive glacier backdrop. Because there are usually fewer visitors, it’s easier to create intimate moments without distractions.
Best for:
romantic lagoon portraits
reflections on calm days
No. 10 - Jökulsárlón: Iceland’s Crown Jewel

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most extraordinary landscapes. Huge icebergs break off the glacier and drift slowly across the lagoon toward the sea. The constantly changing ice creates endless photographic opportunities, from close-up details to grand panoramic scenes.
Best for:
iconic Iceland imagery
timeless elopement portraits
No. 11 - Diamond Beach: Ice Meets Black Sand

Just across the road from Jökulsárlón, chunks of glacial ice wash onto the black sand beach. The sparkling ice pieces look like diamonds scattered along the shore. This location is especially magical at sunrise, when the light catches the ice and creates a soft glow.
Best for:
detail shots
sunrise portraits
striking color contrast
No. 12 - Vestrahorn: The Ultimate Finale

If you continue east, Vestrahorn is the perfect grand finale for a South Coast elopement. The jagged mountain rises directly from black sand dunes, creating one of Iceland’s most recognizable landscapes. The reflections in the wet sand and the dramatic mountain silhouette make this location exceptional at sunrise and sunset.
Best for:
epic mountain portraits
moody weather
unforgettable wide-angle shots

Planning the Perfect South Coast Elopement One of the best things about the South Coast is that these locations naturally build an incredible wedding-day story:
1. Skógafoss for waterfall drama
2. Eldhraun for intimate portraits
3. Fjaðrárgljúfur for canyon views
4. Reynisfjara & Dyrhólaey for the coastline
5. Yoda Cave for something unique
6. Svínafellsjökull & Múlagljúfur for adventure
7. Fjallsárlón & Jökulsárlón for glacier lagoons
8. Diamond Beach for sparkling ice
9. Vestrahorn for a breathtaking finale
